Walt Whitman Trail
According to the Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference, "Walt
Whitman himself doubtlessley walked some of the same paths which now form the
Walk Whitman Trail. Originating at the poet's birthplace, the trail ascends
Reservoir Road to West Hills County Park. The large loop here leads the hiker to
the top of Jayne's Hill, the highest point on Long Island, and across hills
covered in oak, maple, beech and other hardwoods. Openings in the forest canopy
afford views across Broad Hollow, to Manetto Hills, and south to Great South
Bay. Other fine views may also be found on the shorter loop south of Southern
State Parkway". Maureen and I hiked this on a nice late winter day.
