Long Island Sights - M through Z

  Home    Travel

I am a Long Island native, and there is plenty to do here. In this context, by Long Island I am referring not to the geographical fish-shaped island of Long Isand, but rather Nassau and Suffolk Counties, i.e. not Brooklyn and Queens (New York City).

Thomas Moran House National Historic Landmark (East Hampton)

8/16/2012 From there we continued to East Hampton and the Thomas Morgan House NHL. This is the 1837–1926 home of the painter of the Hudson River School, known for his landscape paintings in the American West. The house is in really bad shape, with shoring wood all over including supporting the main front of the house and the chimney. After strolling around a little, checking out the creepy place, we headed east some more ...

William Sidney Mount House National Historic Landmark (Stony Brook)

4/24/2011 The family met at Mom’s house and almost immediately headed right back out to Stony Brook, where we parked in front of the William Sydney Mount NHL. This is a wood sided and shingled house built in 1725 where Hudson Valley School painter William Sidney Mount lived and had a studio from 1807 to 1868. We photoed and walked around the large house, and tried to figure out if it was currently lived in. There appeared to be living house plants inside, yet there was stuff strewn all around the floors in a real mess.
