Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site
5/20/2003 Angled across back roads south to Tuskegee and the Tuskegee Airmen NHS. The site is new and the visitor center is in a triple trailer. Saw a good film on the Airmen and a few exhibits. Went to near the original hanger area (fenced-off still, lots of development to be done) and had a picnic lunch sitting on a wall overlooking the tiny airport.
3/24/2023 Continuing southwest we entered Tuskegee, with the first stop for the Tuskegee Airmen NHS. Things are more developed here than when I last visited decades ago. We parked in the main area, then walked a short way to an overlook with signage about what we could see below, that being the original hangers and control tower from the 1940s.
Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site
10/1/1997 On to Tuskegee and Tuskegee Institute NHS [NHL]. Visited the George W. Carver Museum to learn about Carver and Booker T. Washington (who founded Tuskegee), and toured the home of BTW - The Oaks. The home was made by students; they even made the bricks - a beautiful home.
3/24/2023 Onwards into town we parked at the visitor parking for the Tuskegee Institute NHS and NHL. This is the campus of the Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University), including sites relating to Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver. The parking is right by Booker T. Washington’s home, which we photoed, then walked down and into the main part of Tuskegee University to check out a monument to BTW, then walked back through the very attractive University area to the car.
