Fort Bowie National Historic Site

5/16/1998 Drove into Arizona (1 more time zone); down to Ft. Bowie NM [Fort Bowie and Apache Pass NHL], arriving about 8:15. Already quite warm but beautiful. Took a great 1.5 mile hike into the remains of the ~1880s fort against the Indians. Saw different plants and flowers, old stagecoach stop, cemetery with graves of Geronimo’s son, soldiers, travelers, etc. and the spring that made the area important. Saw the remains of a big, fancy fort to protect against Cochise and the Apache. Talked nature with a ranger and replenished water, then back 1.5 miles along a ridge with great views.

Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site

5/23/2001 Headed back down and stopped at Hubbell Trading Post NHS [NHL]. Saw the trading post from the late 1800s for trade with the Navajo as well as the family home and farm. Saw Navajo women making very expensive rugs.
