National Battlefield Parks - Georgia

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park

5/9/1996 Drove a bit to Kennesaw Mt. National Battlefield Park. Had picnic lunch here, then drove up the mountain for a view of the battlefield, with Atlanta in the distance.

7/12/2026 NPS Kennesaw Mountain NBP. Kennesaw Mountain was the site of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain during the 1864 Atlanta campaign of the American Civil War, in which the Union forces of General William Tecumseh Sherman launched a misguided bloody frontal attack on the Confederate Army of Tennessee, commanded by General Joseph E. Johnston. Although a tactical defeat for the Union, the battle failed to turn back Sherman, who went on to take Atlanta, and then launched his March to the Sea. We parked at the VC (with Ken happily making use of his official park pass and hang tag) and walked down to a spot where we could get a view of the mountain with a cannon and split rail fence in the foreground. Due to a long road maintenance project, we would have had to have waited for a shuttle up the mountain, which we had elected (coming into the trip) not to do. We did take a look through the nice museum at the VC, though.
