Indiana Dunes National Park
9/4/1995 After circling Michigan City a lot, got to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and stopped at Mt. Baldy - a huge dune slowly engulfing the forest. Climbed the dune (tiring!) for a nice view of Lake Michigan. Continued to the visitor center and took a short nature trail through the woods.
8/29/2010 ... east into Indiana and the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. We went to the VC and saw a nice film, then headed to Mt. Baldy and parked at the back of the huge dune. Given the increasingly hot weather we simply walked the easier (but still long) trail down to the lake. It was very pretty with beautiful blue/green color, and there were plenty of people there in beachwear, but we pretty much headed right back.
6/4/2023 Headed west at 8:00 into part of the Indiana Dunes National Park, at Joseph Bailly Homestead NHL in Porter. This was the 1834 home of Joseph Aubert de Gaspé Bailly de Messein one of the first permanent white settlers in NW Indiana and a surviving element of the significant fur trade in the region. We walked around the house in the pleasant morning air and checked out the nearby Little Calumet River with info on kayaking on the Water Trail.
