Kansas National Historic Sites

Brown v Board of Education National Historic Site

5/20/2000 Southwest from there into Topeka, stopping at the schools involved in Brown vs. Board of Education (part of the NPS). Saw the white school where Brown wanted to enroll his children, and the black school (a few miles away) where they were supposed to go.

5/31/2019 Always keeping an eye on the predicted time to the airport, we moved on a very short way to the Monroe Elementary School in the Brown vs Board of Education NHS, also Sumner Elementary School/Monroe Elementary School NHL and also in the FFNHA. The two schools were central to the 1954 Brown v Board of Education segregation case. I had been here decades ago when the school was not very attractive and the park not developed. Now it is looking very nice surrounded by grass with interpretive signage. Inside, a tour was just starting, which didn't fit with our schedule ...

Fort Larned National Historic Site

6/11/2007 ... then on to Fort Larned NHS [NHL]. This fort on the SF trail is superbly restored. Saw a slide show in the visitor center, then walked through all the buildings seeing really excellent reproductions of the contents (quarters, hospital, supply stores, etc.). Chatted with a blacksmith while he worked on making a new tool to be used to make chain. Really nice place.

Nicodemus National Historic Site

6/11/2007 Headed north to Nicodemus NHS [Historic District], an all Black town established for freed slaves after the war. At first they had to dig dugout houses, then soddies, eventually a town over 700. Today it is around 35, but distant relatives from all over still come back during homecoming. We saw exhibits and a good video in the visitor center (the old meeting hall) and chatted with the ranger, then drove around to photo the few other remaining buildings from the past.
