National Historic Sites - Kansas
Fort Larned National Historic Site
6/11/2007 ... then on to Fort Larned NHS [NHL]. This fort on the SF trail is superbly restored.
Saw a slide show in the visitor center, then walked through all the buildings seeing really excellent reproductions
of the contents (quarters, hospital, supply stores, etc.). Chatted with a blacksmith while he worked on making a new
tool to be used to make chain. Really nice place.

Fort Scott National Historic Site
5/21/2000 Headed south and stopped at Fort Scott NHS for a walk around [NHL]. This fort served
in the Indian wars, during the slave/free troubled times in Kansas and the Civil War.

Nicodemus National Historic Site
6/11/2007 Headed north to Nicodemus NHS [Historic District], an all Black town established for
freed slaves after the war. At first they had to dig dugout houses, then soddies, eventually a town over 700. Today
it is around 35, but distant relatives from all over still come back during homecoming. We saw exhibits and a good
video in the visitor center (the old meeting hall) and chatted with the ranger, then drove around to photo the few
other remaining buildings from the past.
