Maine Acadian Culture
6/30/2008 Arrived in Fort Kent and after circling a bit, found Fort Kent SHS. In the Acadian Culture NHA, this
blockhouse was part of the defenses in the disputed border area between the US and Canada (each claiming much more in the other’s country),
finally settled in the 1800s. Checked out the few exhibits, … Continued to Van Buren to the Acadian Village, also in the NHA. Got a
guidebook (and the key since the place just opened) and walked from building to building. These are mostly original relocated buildings
(and some reproductions) showing Acadian life from the 1800s and 1900s. All kinds of interesting stuff we had fun with – very realistic
settings. Quite warm walking around here.

Roosevelt Campobello International Park
6/29/2008 Up the coast a little and into NB Canada on Campobello Island and to Roosevelt-Campobello International
Park, where FDR went as a boy and visited throughout his life. Saw a film in the visitor center, then walked through the very inviting
home with guides in different rooms. Again, views would have been fantastic sans fog. Took a short trail down to the water and noted how
really high the pilings on the floating docks were to manage the huge tidal change.
