National Rivers - Multi-State
Big South Fork River and Recreation Area (Kentucky, Tennessee)
9/28/2007 Circled around Stearns a little looking for the Big South Fork NRRA [KY] visitor center and found
it finally. Nothing really there for me (it is where people get the scenic railroad) so into the park area. Stopped at
Devil’s Jump for a view into the gorge created by the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River. Some heavy fog still around
on an otherwise gorgeous day in the low 80s. Continued a ways to the Blue Heron mining community (destination of the scenic
railroad). This is an early 20th century coal mining community no longer in existence. The buildings (other than the main
distribution building and conveyer) are gone and are represented by metal shells.
