Theodore Roosevelt National Park
9/8/1992 Drove from Rapid, past the geographical center of the US (or within 10 miles of it) and up to Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota (lunch at diner in Bowman, ND). Nice park with some badlands type area, woodlands and prairie. Saw prairie dogs, and bison right up at side of road!
6/12/2008 On the road south down to the north unit of Theodore Roosevelt NP. Weather has continued quite cool (40s in the morning) with biting winds and occasional rain. At the NP, checked out the visitor center, then drove the length (14 miles) of the road and back. Finally, some really interesting ND terrain – lots of badlands formations and overlooks to the Little Missouri River, etc. Did spot plenty of bison close up, including a few who decided to make like squirrels and dart in front of the car. Continued south to the TR NP south unit. ... In the park, we drove the whole loop road (36 miles). We spotted one lone prairie dog (despite five or so massive towns) and more bison, but near the end were happy to spot our real quarry – a herd of wild horses. Checked out the visitor center ... .
