National Historical Parks - Ohio

Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park

9/27/1997 Back over to Wright-Pat and to the Huffman Prairie [Flying Field NHL] area we tried last night. This is the field where the Wright brothers developed their flying machines. Some markers and a reconstructed hanger here, not much else. ... Continued to the south part of Dayton to Carillon Park, a very nice place with original and/or reconstructed buildings from the area - a 1700s tavern, homes, gas station, covered bridge, a reconstruction of the Wright Cycle Shop, and an original 1905 Wright Flyer III [NHL], also part of the Dayton Aviation National Historic Park.

5/30/2011 ... then went a bit more for the National Aviation Heritage Area (NPS) and parked at the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center and Aviation Trail, Inc. Center. We checked out the Wright Cycle Company (NHL) building first. Of the five cycle shops the Wrights had, this is the only extant building that housed a Wright bicycle shop on its original foundation and in its original location. After looking at the cycle exhibits and chatting with a ranger we went to the IC/VC and looked at the exhibits on the Wrights, aviation and poet Paul Dunbar. A short distance away we saw the Paul Laurence Dunbar House NHL. The house was the 1904-1906 home of the poet whose work is known for its colorful language and use of dialect.
