Log Excerpt: "... then found the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont (also the Spiegel Grove NHL). The Rutherford B. Hayes Center Library was the first presidential library and one of only three for a 19th-century president. President Hayes inherited the property known as Spiegel Grove from his maternal uncle, Sardis Birchard, who purchased the property in 1846 and built the house in 1859. We got tickets to the house tour, then looked around the museum for a while and photoed the exterior of the home. “Rud” Hayes’s Civil War service and his duties as a United States Congressman and governor of Ohio prevented the Hayes family from making Spiegel Grove their permanent residence until 1873. Hayes descendents lived in the home into the 1960s. The home is still undergoing reconstruction to its appearance when RBH lived there (still needs wallpaper, paintings, etc.) but otherwise is very impressive, with a really nice library (RBH collected many books). After the tour we walked a little on the very pretty grounds with big old trees to the gravesite of Rutherford and wife Lucy."
