Peter Norbeck Byway
10/3/2019 Leaving the park, we got on the Peter Norbeck NSB, which turned out to be one of the more enjoyable byways we’ve been on. Ken had to pay attention due to tight winding roads and occasional morning ice patches. There are cool pigtail bridges which actually corkscrew back over themselves for a rapid elevation change in a small space, and tunnels cut directly in the rock. One tunnel had us facing directly at Rushmore in the distance as we went through. We left the NSB for a bit, then back on it near one entrance to Custer State Park where we headed east. The park is South Dakota's largest and first state park, named after Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer. As a representative point in the park we stopped at the State Game Lodge, an attractive and rustic building which had been used by President Coolidge as a Summer White House. We also went a short distance down a wildlife road which often has views of Bison and other animals, but not for us this day; still, the views were very pretty.
