George Washington Memorial Parkway (District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia)
9/22/1996 Back into D.C.; after lots of circling stopped at Theodore Roosevelt Island (NPS). Walked across a bridge and around the island, stopping at a huge statue and monument to T.R. Drove a short way down the G. W. Parkway [VA] to Lyndon B. Johnson Memorial Grove overlooking the Potomac. Had a nice picnic lunch in the pine grove looking at D.C.
7/26/1997 Drove down the GW Parkway [VA] to Mount Vernon [NHL]. ... Up the GW Parkway, with a nice view of Ft. Washington, through Alexandria to Gravelly Point. Stopped here for a walk along the Mount Vernon Trail (NPS - part of Potomac Heritage NST [VA]) to a spot right at the end of the runway at National. Spent a while watching the planes drop in directly overhead for landing only a short distance away.
10/10/2016 Went around the beltway to Glen Echo Park, in the George Washington Memorial Parkway [MD] group of the NPS. Although just about everything was closed in the off season, I enjoyed walking around on a cool but beautiful day. Everything in the park has an Art Deco look, and a large indoor carousel is one of the main attractions.
Natchez Trace Parkway (Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee)
5/6/1996 Got on the Natchez Trace Parkway [NPS][MS] and saw an Indian village site and the visitor center.
9/17/2016 I jumped on the Natchez Trace Parkway NSB [TN] and took it for over 50 miles back to Nashville.
10/14/2017 ... before we got back in the car and jumped on the Natchez Trace Parkway [MS](AAR and NPS, also p/o Mississippi Hills NHA). This was a very pleasant and scenic drive along the water and wooded areas.
10/15/2017 Nearby we jumped on the Natchez Trace Parkway for an out-and-back stretch to take credit in AL.
4/30/2023 A short distance away we jumped on the Natchez Trace Parkway (NPS and AAR) and enjoyed the gentle curves and lush greenery of the pretty road all the way to the southern terminus in Natchez. Right near the end we stopped at the Emerald Mound Site NHL for yet another group of Indian mounds. This is a Mississippian period archaeological site and the type site for the Emerald Phase (1500 to 1680 CE) of the Natchez Bluffs Plaquemine culture.
